Otago University Makes its Debut at the UTSNZ National Tertiary Netball Championship

In a historic moment for Otago University, the institution competed in the UTSNZ National Tertiary Netball Championship for the very first time since the tournament began in 2016. This long-awaited debut saw Otago represented by a passionate team of players, including Chloe Davis and Lena Sakalian, who shared their thoughts on what this milestone meant for them and their university.

Speaking with Chloe and Lena, it’s clear that the experience was about more than just the competition—it was about making history. “To compete for the first time was awesome,” Lena said with a smile. “It’s a great experience, and I'm glad we could come for the first time in like 20 years.” For the team, the standout moment was their first win. “Being the little underdogs that no one really knew, and then coming out and winning our first game—it was awesome,” Lena added.

Chloe also reinforced the bond that was built within the team. “We all study different degrees, but we share the same love of netball, which is really, really nice. It’s not just about the competition - it’s about coming together as a uni and meeting other teams who play at such an amazing level. It’s been really fun.”

Despite having only eight weeks of training and some players having to play out of position, the Otago team managed to come together and make their mark. Chloe emphasised the challenge and growth they experienced: “We started off barely knowing anyone in the team, and we were learning something completely new just to make this happen. But it’s been really, really fun and such a great learning experience.”

When asked what they’d say to new students starting at Otago in 2025 who might be interested in netball, both players agreed that the opportunities at Otago are incredible. Lena encouraged students to get involved, saying, “Otago has so many great opportunities, especially with events like this. You never know where it might lead.” She added that UTSNZ offers a platform to compete at a national level in multiple sports, which makes for an unforgettable experience. “You get to travel with your friends and compete – it’s just great, so definitely take advantage of these opportunities.”

Otago University’s first time competing in the UTSNZ National Tertiary Netball Championship was all about teamwork, growth, and memorable moments. Players like Lena Sakalian and Chloe Davis helped set the stage for what could be the start of something great for Otago netball. Their passion and determination brought the team together, making this debut a special milestone. And with this experience under their belt, the future of netball at Otago looks promising.
