University of Auckland reclaims the Championship Shield

Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland has won the 2026 National Tertiary Championship Shield, sealing the season-long title after finishing second at the National Tertiary Netball Championship in Auckland on Sunday.

The Shield rewards results across eight national championship events. The University of Auckland entered the final weekend ahead of the University of Otago, with the overall title still in contention. Its netball result secured the Shield and brought the University of Canterbury’s three-year run as overall national champions to an end. Massey University won the netball championship, with AUT finishing third.

The title was built on performances across the year, with the University of Auckland’s women’s teams playing a leading role. They won national titles in 3x3 basketball, volleyball and futsal, added bronze in basketball, and finished second in netball. The University of Auckland also won the badminton championship and took second place in rowing, men’s volleyball, men’s futsal and men’s basketball. Together with a third-place finish in ultimate, those results gave Auckland the depth to win the Shield.

The University of Otago kept the race close to the final event. Otago won rowing and men’s futsal and collected podium finishes across 3x3, volleyball, futsal, ultimate and basketball. As UTSNZ reported earlier in the series, the University of Otago was chasing its first overall Shield since 2010. Its sustained challenge gave the final weekend significance well beyond the netball
title.

First contested in 1923, the Shield has been held by generations of university teams. The University of Auckland last won it in 2022, before the University of Canterbury claimed three consecutive titles from 2023 to 2025. This year’s victory returns the overall championship to Waipapa Taumata Rau after a series that tested the breadth of its sporting programme.

The Shield was one of two season-long awards decided at netball. Te Kaitiaki, the overall Spirit Award, recognises how teams contribute to the championship experience. The University of Otago claimed that title for the first time this year.
