National Tertiary Basketball Championships Set to Tip Off in Christchurch

The best university basketball teams from across Aotearoa will converge on Christchurch this weekend for the 2026 National Tertiary Basketball Championships, with national titles and valuable Championship Series points on the line at Parakiore Recreation & Sport Centre.

The three-day tournament will see eight men's teams and eight women's teams compete from 11–13 September, with pool play on Friday and Saturday before the competition culminates in playoff and grand final action on Sunday.

The men's competition will be headlined by the University of Canterbury as they look to extend their remarkable run of success at the championships. The UC men have won the national title in each of the event’s past three editions, claiming last year’s crown over the Univ ersity of Otago in Auckland. They will now attempt to make it four consecutive titles while getting to play in front of a home.

UC has been drawn in Men's Pool A alongside Massey University, the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington, while Pool B features the University of Otago, Lincoln University, the University of Waikato and AUT.

The women's competition promises to be equally competitive, with the University of Waikato returning as defending champions.

Waikato will face the University of Canterbury, University of Auckland and Massey University in Women's Pool A. Pool B features the University of Otago, Lincoln University, AUT and Victoria University of Wellington.

The opening day features a number of intriguing match-ups, including a first round battle between Waikato and Lincoln, while the women's tournament begins with Auckland taking on Canterbury at 9:45am.

The University of Auckland men's team will face defending champions Canterbury later on Friday, while the defending women's champions Waikato begin their title defence against a dangerous-looking Massey University at 11:30am.

The tournament will reach its climax on Sunday, with the men's grand final scheduled for 1:15pm before the women's championship game tips off at 3:00pm. Prizegiving will follow at approximately 4:45pm.

The championships are also an important stop in the 2026 UTSNZ National Tertiary Championship Series, with results contributing towards the race for the UTSNZ Shield as universities battle for overall honours across the season.

Following six events, the University of Auckland currently leads the Shield standings ahead of the University of Otago and the University of Canterbury. With basketball offering up points for both the men’s and women’s competitions, a strong set of performances from any contender could have a significant impact on the race for the overall title.

Selected matches throughout the weekend will be livestreamed from Court 8, allowing supporters around the country to follow the action even if they can't make it to Parakiore Recreation & Sport Centre.

With national titles to defend, records to extend and Shield points up for grabs, the stage is set for three days of top-level tertiary basketball in Christchurch.
