10 Years of IDUS New Zealand to Join FISU’s Global 10K Challenge

This September, students and staff across the New Zealand tertiary sector are being challenged to get moving as UTSNZ joins a global FISU celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the International Day of University Sport (IDUS).

Celebrated around the world on 20 September each year, IDUS recognises the role sport and physical activity can play in university life, including supporting wellbeing and healthy living, creating connection and bringing university communities together.

2026 marks a special milestone, with IDUS celebrating its 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) is inviting university communities around the world to take part in a shared “10 years – 10 kilometres” initiative.

Here in Aotearoa New Zealand, UTSNZ is taking the challenge one step further:

Can New Zealand’s university community collectively move 10,000 kilometres?

From Monday 14 to Sunday 20 September, students and staff across New Zealand’s universities are invited to complete 10 kilometres of movement and contribute their distance to a national total.

The challenge is deliberately simple and inclusive. You don’t need to be an athlete, enter a race or complete your distance in one go.

Walk it. Run it. Ride it. Row it. Swim it. Wheel it.

Participants can paddle, use cardio equipment at the gym, clock up kilometres through another sporting activity, or find their own way to move. The emphasis is on participation rather than performance, and the 10 kilometres can be completed individually, with friends or colleagues, or as part of a university activity.

And while 10K is the challenge, there’s no need to stop there. Participants completing more than 10 kilometres can submit their actual distance, with every kilometre counting towards New Zealand’s 10,000 km target.

Move. Track. Submit. Count.

Taking part will be easy.

Complete your activity during the challenge week, record your distance using Strava, Garmin, another activity tracker or suitable record of your activity, and submit your kilometres through the UTSNZ online form. Participants will also be encouraged to share a photo from their 10K and show us where the challenge takes them.

UTSNZ will keep a running national total throughout the week as kilometres come in from around the country.

The aim is not to create a competition between universities. Instead, the challenge is about seeing what New Zealand’s university community can achieve together – connecting thousands of individual kilometres into one national contribution to a much bigger international celebration.

The national challenge will also complement the range of IDUS activities being organised by individual universities around the country, with universities able to incorporate the 10K Challenge into their own activities or simply encourage their students and staff to take part independently.

IDUS was proclaimed by UNESCO and is celebrated annually on 20 September, connecting university communities around the world through sport and physical activity. For its 10th anniversary, FISU’s global 10-kilometre initiative will demonstrate the collective scale and reach of the international university sport movement.

New Zealand’s kilometres will become part of that international story.

On Sunday 20 September, UTSNZ will join university communities around the world in a coordinated IDUS celebration, sharing New Zealand activity at 4.00pm NZST using #IDUS2026 and connecting with FISU’s global campaign.

Following the challenge, UTSNZ will reveal just how far New Zealand moved together, along with the number of participants and universities represented and some of the photos and stories collected along the way.

Whether your 10K takes you around campus, along a favourite running trail, into the pool, onto a bike, through the gym or somewhere completely different, it all counts.

10 Years. 10K. 10,000K Together.

The IDUS 10K Challenge runs from 14–20 September 2026.

Keep an eye on UTSNZ and university sport and recreation channels for the participation link and campaign updates.
