National Tertiary Volleyball Championships set to Ignite Tight UTSNZ Shield Race

The 2026 National Tertiary Volleyball Championships will take centre stage this weekend as New Zealand's leading university volleyball players converge on the B&M Centre inside Palmerston North’s Central Energy Trust Arena for two days of exciting competition.

Taking place on 11–12 July, the championships form the fourth event of the 2026 University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand (UTSNZ) National Tertiary Championship Series, with valuable UTSNZ Shield points on offer as universities continue their pursuit of the coveted overall title.

The race for the Shield is finely poised heading into the weekend. The University of Auckland currently leads the standings on 24 points, closely followed by the University of Otago (23), the University of Waikato (22) and the University of Canterbury (20). With only four points separating the top four institutions, strong performances in Palmerston North could dramatically reshape the leaderboard as the series moves into its second half.

Both the men's and women's competitions are expected to feature high-quality volleyball, with all eight universities from across Aotearoa competing for national honours. The University of Canterbury men and University of Waikato women return as defending champions, both aiming to defend the titles they secured last year.

Beyond the pursuit of championship titles, the event provides student-athletes with the opportunity to represent their universities on the national stage while strengthening the connections and traditions that underpin tertiary sport in New Zealand.

Teams will also compete for the event’s spirit medals with points going towards Te Kaitiaki, recognising the university that best embodies the values of sportsmanship, respect, culture and team spirit throughout the championships.

Play begins at 9am on Saturday morning, with pool matches taking place throughout the day before the semi-final and finals rounds are contested on Sunday at CET Arena.

Supporters are encouraged to attend and cheer on their university, while those unable to make it to Palmerston North can tune into multiple courts live on the UTSNZ YouTube channel – see the links below.
