Otago Aims to Continue Dominance at 2026 NZ University Rowing Championships
All eight of New Zealand’s universities will be represented at Lake Karapiro this weekend, as more than 380 student-athletes compete at the 2026 NZ University Rowing Championships on 3–4 April.
Crews from AUT, University of Auckland, University of Waikato, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, Lincoln University and University of Otago will take to the water, highlighting the nationwide reach and strength of tertiary rowing in Aotearoa.
Lake Karapiro, one of the country’s premier rowing venues, provides the perfect stage for the championships, with racing beginning on Friday afternoon and continuing through to Saturday evening. The regatta gets underway with two of the most prestigious events of the weekend — the Championship Eight finals for the Tamaki Cup and Hebberley Shield.
The University of Canterbury men return as defending Hebberley Shield champions and will be looking to hold off strong challenges from across the field, while the University of Otago women will aim to retain the Tamaki Cup after their dominant performance in 2025.
Beyond individual events, the overall UTSNZ Shield will once again be a key focus across the regatta. The University of Otago has established itself as the benchmark in recent years, claiming the shield every year since its introduction in 2021. With strength across all grades and boat classes, Otago will be aiming to continue that streak — but will face determined competition from a hungry chasing pack.
The event features four grades, ranging from Novice — for those who have taken up rowing for the first time this year — through to Championship level. This structure ensures the regatta not only showcases high performance racing, but also celebrates participation, development, and the university rowing journey.
For many, it marks their first experience of competition. For others, it’s a chance to test themselves against the best in the country — all within the same event.
With athletes balancing study alongside training and competition, the NZ University Rowing Championships remain a key event on the tertiary sporting calendar.
The regatta not only crowns national university champions, but also highlights the strength of rowing pathways in New Zealand, with many athletes progressing to national and international representation.
With pride, silverware, and university bragging rights on the line, all eyes will be on Lake Karapiro as the country’s best student rowers go head-to-head.
