Universities Celebrate International Day of University Sport 2025
On September 20th, universities across Aotearoa once again came together to celebrate the International Day of University Sport (IDUS), showcasing the power of sport to unite students, create community, and build lifelong connections. Campuses nationwide were alive with activity as institutions organised events that highlighted both competition and fun, encouraging students of all abilities to get involved. The celebrations were proudly supported by FISU Oceania, connecting New Zealand’s efforts to the global university sport movement.
Lincoln University
Lincoln marked IDUS with an Amazing Race-style competition on the basketball courts. Teams of four tackled challenges ranging from basketball shooting, skipping, and push-ups to an obstacle course and relay race. Prizes rewarded the top three finishers, while spot prizes kept the atmosphere light and inclusive. The event, run by Lincoln Sport staff, attracted a strong turnout and delivered on its key message of bringing friends together for a day of social, physical activity
University of Otago
At Otago, the focus was on showcasing the campus’ new outdoor recreational space. Students were invited to try table tennis, pickleball, and basketball, with a free-throw competition offering supermarket vouchers for sharp shooters. A sausage sizzle ensured plenty of foot traffic, drawing in students between lectures and making the new space a hub of activity. The event was delivered in partnership with UniPol Recreational Services and the Otago University Students’ Association
University of Canterbury
The University of Canterbury hosted a 3x3 basketball tournament and shoot-out competition, run by the UC Amateur Sports Society (UCASS). Open to players of all abilities, the event encouraged both social participation and semi-competitive play. With prizes on offer and a focus on fun, the competition drew in crowds throughout the day, turning the central campus courts into a lively sporting arena
University of Waikato
Waikato celebrated IDUS with multi-sport events across both its Hamilton and Tauranga campuses. Students were invited to join in basketball knockout, volleyball 1v1s, table tennis, and pickleball “around the world” challenges. Each activity offered prizes — from sports gear to gym memberships — to encourage participation. The events also highlighted UTSNZ opportunities, helping raise awareness of how students can connect to the wider tertiary sport pathway
Victoria University of Wellington (Te Herenga Waka)
At Te Herenga Waka, IDUS stretched across three campus locations — The Hub, the Clubhouse games room, and the Recreation Centre. Activities ranged from table tennis, teqball, and cornhole to racing simulators and sticky golf, alongside access to traditional sports like basketball, badminton, and volleyball. Students could also take part in group fitness sessions, with free access to recreation facilities across the day. Social media promotion and a highlight reel helped spread the celebration beyond campus
A Celebration of Connection
Together, these events highlighted the diverse ways in which universities are using sport to bring students together - from competitive basketball to casual games and community BBQs. The 2025 International Day of University Sport, supported by FISU Oceania, was not only a celebration of physical activity but also a reminder of the deeper role sport plays in fostering friendships, building campus culture, and strengthening social bonds across Aotearoa’s tertiary institutions.
