NZ Student Journalist Selected to Report at 2025 FISU Games in Germany

UTSNZ is thrilled to announce that Coby Moratti, a talented young media creative from Ara Institute of Canterbury, has been selected for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games Young Sports Media Talent Programme.

Coby is one of just six aspiring international journalists from outside Germany chosen to be part of this prestigious international initiative, which will see him travel to Germany in July 2025 to join an international media team covering one of the largest multi-sport events on the global calendar.

The RR2025 Young Sports Media Talent Programme is designed to give university students practical, high-level experience in international sports journalism. The prestigious programme, run by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), provides hands-on experience for the next generation of sports media professionals, offering selected participants the opportunity to report live from one of the world’s largest multi-sport events for student-athletes. The selection recognises young people who demonstrate both journalistic talent and a passion for university sport. Learn more about the programme here.

Coby’s selection comes as no surprise to UTSNZ, following his outstanding work contributing to event live streams, video production, and commentary at several UTSNZ National Tertiary Championship events. His involvement with UTSNZ's 'Team UTSNZ' Workforce Development Programme provided a valuable platform to gain real-world experience, sharpen his skills, and build a portfolio that supported his successful application to the international programme.

“We are absolutely thrilled for Coby,” said UTSNZ Executive Director Sarah Anderson. “This is a fantastic achievement that showcases the calibre of talent within our student workforce and how opportunities through UTSNZ can be a springboard to global experiences.

Coby’s journey is an inspiring example of how UTSNZ supports student talent through its Workforce Development Programme, which connects passionate students with hands-on roles across sport media, event operations, and team management. These roles don’t just enhance the tertiary sport experience - they open doors to future careers in sport, media, and beyond.

“Being part of the UTSNZ events was an incredible stepping stone,” said Coby. “It gave me the opportunity to work in a fast-paced live environment and develop my storytelling skills. I’m so grateful for the support and the chance to now take those skills to an international level.”

UTSNZ Executive Director Sarah Anderson says Coby’s selection is further proof that the organisation’s focus on student workforce development is paying off.

“We’re incredibly proud of Coby. His journey reflects what Team UTSNZ is all about - creating pathways for students that go beyond the sidelines and lead to meaningful global opportunities. We’re also excited to continue working with tertiary institutions and academic departments to identify and support students with similar potential.”

The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will take place from 16–27 July 2025, with over 10,000 student-athletes from more than 170 countries expected to compete.
